One thing I’ll never tire of is seeing people express their love for one another. How great it is to watch a family cuddle together, to see a father cry as they give their daughter on her wedding day, and to peer in as grandparents swoon at the birth of their new grandbaby. When I received a call to photograph a destination engagement here in Las Cruces I knew in an instant that I wanted to take part in their special day. These photos would be evidence of the first days of this couple’s love story and I knew how much I’d treasure being a part of that. This was all a surprise, of course, and the trick would be finding a way to do a photo shoot prior to the engagement without the soon-to-be-finance suspecting what was to come. This couple loved the gorgeous backdrop of the Organ mountains and we headed there under the guise of a regular photo shoot for this photography-loving couple. The sky was clear and the sun was bright as they walked, talked, and cuddled in fields of tall yellow grass. We were in luck that his gorgeous soon-to-be-finance had no idea of what the rest of the day would hold for her; she only knew that she had to visit White Sands before heading out of town. We drove the straight path through the stark New Mexican landscape out to our White Sands oasis. After taking a few photos in the barren white sandy hills he surprise her by pulling out his cell phone. In the months prior to their New Mexico visit, he had interviewed her family, asking what they thought of the idea of him asking her to marry. She teared up as she watched family member after family member exclaim their excitement at the though of them marrying. After the video was over he pulled out all the stops by placing photos of the two of them in a circle in the sand. He knelt down and asked her to marry him.
It couldn’t have gone more smoothly. It was beautiful, real, and emotional. It was just perfect and I was so glad to be a part of it. Congratulations, you two. I am incredibly happy for you and can’t wait for you to soon experience the joy of marriage.
